It’s May, the sun’s shining, and we’re recognizing Skin Cancer Prevention and Awareness Month. Fortunately, skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, so we’ll be sharing protection tips and information, over the next few weeks on Facebook. Unfortunately the rates of skin cancer keep rising.

 Wear Sunscreen
This is a simple, easy way to be proactive about your skin health. Apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above 15 to 20 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours, or when the label on your products suggests you should.

Seek Shade
Overexposure to harmful UV rays are a huge factor in developing skin cancer. To protect yourself, seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4p.m. when the sun is at its strongest. If you work outside and have to be in direct sunlight, wear protective clothing and a wide brimmed hat to shield your skin.

Perform regular self-examinations
Check your skin regularly to ensure that nothing has changed. If you have a new mole or if an old mole has increased in size, there could be an issue. Other indications that you might have a problem include a change in mole color (from brown to black or varied), a change in the outline of your mole or developing a spot that becomes raised above your skin.
